Adirondack Theater Festival
The Adirondack Theater Fesitval is just over ten years old and offers professional equity group theater all summer long. You can usually see one play and one musical per season, plus a smattering of workshops, readings, cabaret, and a few other theater-related offerings during the summertime, with some just for kids. The shows take place at the French Mountain Playhouse, which is conveniently located for tourists, on the grounds of the Lake George RV Park. The Lake George RV Park and the the Adirondack Theater Festival are located on NY Route 149 in Lake George.
Lake George Dinner Theater
If the Adirondack Theater Festival is where to go to see more modern or less well-known plays, the Lake George Dinner Theater offers the rest of the spectrum...your classic theater standards you'll find in any summer theater stock company around the small towns and villages across the country. This is pure entertainment, folks, so sit back, order your meal, and let the show begin. These actors are professional equity, too, but they offer you theater entertainment that won't tax the brain while you savor your excellent meal. Get yourself to the Holiday Inn-Turf on Highway 9 in Lake George for a fine evening of food and fun.
Lake George Opera Festival
OK, this is opera, and it's in a high school auditorium, but really, it's quite good and lots of fun. Try it while on vacation in Lake George and you just might be surprised. They singers sing in English so you might understand the plot. Every summer they offer two operas, usually standars such as Othello, and sometimes with special guests like The Harlem Boys Choir. If you show up one hour before the performance, the director offers a little orientation to the show, which may help you understand and more fully enjoy the show. The tickets are a bit more than theater or a movie, but you will really get your money's worth. They put on a great show, and for every paying adult, one kid under 12 gets in for free.
Lake George Arts Project
The Lake George Arts Project serves as a gallery and promotes local arts events, including the Lake George Jazz Weekend. The gallery is open to the public and free to visitors. You can view different exhibits there throughout the year. The hours are limited...only open during the afternoon and only part of the week, but they will open the gallery for you on special request if you call them ahead of time. The Lake George Jazz Weekend takes place each year the week after Labor Day weekend. The Lake George Arts Project also sponsers music in the park series on Wednesday nights, and these concerts are free too. It makes a dreamy summer evening on the lake, listening to live music.
