Natural Stone Bridge & Caves

This is a real cave attraction, advertised in a home-spun hokey-fun way not commonly seen these days in the world of mega-bucks theme parks and slick advertising campaigns. It's family-owned, by the same family since the 1700's! In addition to caves to explore with our kids, there is also a 180-foot stone bridge with a river running under it. You can take a self-guided tour to the caves, which date back ten thousand years. The bridge is a natural formation, and also where the owners have decided to build their gift shop and main building. The actual bridge dates back even further than the caves, since it contains marble rock from almost a billion year ago.

Kids will like the part where they can do some hands-on panning for semiprecious minerals. Have them check out the trout fishing area and the play area, too.

Natural Stone Bridge & Caves is located on Stone Bridge Road in Pottersville, which is exit 26 off the Northway, or I-87. It's open every day from May to October and the admission price is good for the whole season. You can come back for more!

Adirondack Balloon Flights

Spring through late Fall, it's possible to see the Adirondacks and Lake George from a hot-air balloon. For a whole hour, you and your kids can rise and glide hundreds of feet above the land for a day nobody in your family will probably ever forget. The cost is more than most family-oriented activities, but consider what you are getting in return and the cost may seem negligible to you. The balloon rides coast along in the valley between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondacks in the Lake George region. Some people recommend the early evening trip, for extra special views. Warren County Fish Hatchery The Warren County Fish Hatchery is a delightfully under-marketed and non-glossy and far from in-your-face place to take your kids in the Lake George area. It's also free, fun, and educational all at the same time. There's an introductory fifteen-minute film to watch, before you hit actual jam-packed troughs for viewing. It's rainbow and brook trout here. There are also outdoor ponds for the bigger fish, or older fish that is, from where the fish go to the lakes and streams of Warren County. Bring a lunch and make a day or half-day of it, since they have picnic tables and the area is very pleasant.

Warren County Fish Hatchery is located on Echo Lake Road in Warrensburg, which is a short drive from Lake George. It's open every day from 8am to 4pm.

Garnet Hill Lodge Naturalist Programs

This is a nature walk for kids and adults, on trails that cross-country skiiers use in wintertime. This is a good place to bring kids because maybe you can squeeze some learning into your vacation...there are plant and tree identification signs and they'll learn to look for signs of wildlife. The tours last around two hours and are offered in July and August, which is when most kids visit this Lake George area. The tour is under $5, and even cheaper for the kids. You can get lunch at the Log House Restaurant, or even breakfast if you show up early enough. It has a great lake view.

Garnet Hill Lodge is located on 13th Lake Road in North River, which is a short drive from Lake George.

Garnet Mine Tours

This is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, believe it or not. Tours are available every day during summer time and on the weekends in early fall. The tours are fun for kids because they are allowed to pick up souvenirs along the way; garnet specimens, that is. The charge is under five dollars.

Garnet Mine Tours is located on NY Route 28 in North River, just a short drive from Lake George.

The Great Escape Splashwater Kingdom

This is a kids' extravaganza explosion of fun rides, shows, entertainment, and water park.

The Great Escape is located on US Highway 9 in Lake George. It costs more than lots of things in the Lake George region, but you get a lot for your money, not to mention exhausted kids by the end of the day. It's open May through Labor day, and for Oktoberfest and one weekend in September. Prices vary, quaintly, by your height and parking is free.

Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark

This new attraction and theme resort features a 38,000 square foot indoor waterpark inside a gigantic log-cabin style lodge that can accommodate 200 guest suites, 6,500 square feet for banquets and conferences, two restaurants, two gift shops, a spa, an arcade and a fitness center. The lobby is grand-lodge style, where you can relax in front of a fireplace with your family. The waterpark itself has a beach, and an area where you can go boogie-boarding or surfing, and a mega-super treehouse that will make any kid gasp. Year-round access to water sports and a tannign roof are a welcome addition to the Adirondacks and Lake George region, and this new attraction and lodge promise to be a great destination for years to come. Ask about weddings, conferences, and group events here.

Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark is located in Queensbury, which is exit 20 off I-87. Just a short drive from Lake George.
