Tourism is Lake George's lifeblood, and summertime is the make-or-break season for local businesses in the tourism industry. Vacation rentals are big business, which means big prices. Fortunately for those who can afford it, the high prices mean high quality and in some cases high glamour. Yes, high glamour in Lake George...just ask a realtor to point you toward some premium vacation rentals and you will find luxury properties to rival properties in high-end vacation rental markets such as the Florida Keys or and coastal areas along the Atlantic states. Rent one of the Great Camps for your family or corportate group, or just a historical mansion that used to house the important rich families who first settled Lake George. The area was and still is a retreat for wealthy families from the region and from New York City, who may rent out their home for a summer if they don't plan on being there. Also, because Lake George is a popular destination in summertime, there are exquisite homes that are maintained exclusively for the purpose of serving the vacation rental market. Ask as many realtors as you can, and search the Internet as well, to find exactly what you are looking for. General Tips

Summer rates are higher than the off-peak season, but August rates may go up even further than the normal summer rate. This is not only a hot season for travelling and the tourism industry in general, but it's also a hot season in the Lake George region. Lake George is a reasonable driving distance from Saratoga, whose racing season affects the entire Lake George/Lower Adirondacks/Upper Hudson area, vacation rentals included. Most require a minimum of one week's stay and also a deposit to hold the room, sometimes as high as 25% of the rental fee. Some rentals rent only for the whole season, or for a four week period only.
